2022 LACUS Conference
Call for Participation

The 2019 annual conference of the Linguistic Association of Canada and the United States will be held
August 2-5 at the University of Waterloo, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada.


The conference theme is
Contacts and Interactions
Abstracts.  While abstracts presenting empirically grounded investigations in any theoretical framework into aspects of the conference theme are especially welcome, LACUS invites abstracts representing a broad range of approaches to language, including interdisciplinary topics and innovative ideas.  The following list of topics is intended as suggestive rather than comprehensive or restrictive.
  • Cognitive and neurolinguistic approaches to language
  • Computational and corpus approaches to language
  • Human (a.k.a., Hard-science) linguistics
  • Language in the media
  • Forensic and clinical linguistics
  • Multilingualism and genre
  • Teaching second and foreign languages
  • Stratificational modeling of language
  • Systemic-functional approaches to language
  • Issues in graphology, phonology, grammar, lexis, discourse, modality, ontology, diachronic linguistics, geolinguistics, sociolinguistics, etc.

The Ruth Brend Fund provides financial support to help defray costs of attending LACUS meetings for members from countries with weak currencies.  The Presidents Prize Fund helps pay for prizes awarded to the best student and post-doctoral papers presented at each annual LACUS conference.

Important Dates.  The following is the planned timeline for LACUS 2019.  Authors of abstracts submitted by Nov. 30, 2018, will be informed of its acceptance or rejection by Dec. 14.  Authors of abstracts submitted after Nov. 30 will receive notification by March 15.
  • 15 AUG 2018:  Abstract submission opens (on-line)
  • 30 NOV 2018:  First Round abstract submission deadline [1st ROUND CLOSED TO SUBMISSIONS]
  • 14 DEC 2018:  Notification of acceptance/rejection of First Round submissions
  • 15 FEB 2019:  Second Round (Final) abstract submission deadline [2nd ROUND CLOSED TO SUBMISSIONS]
  • 15 MAR 2019: Notification of acceptance / rejection of Second Round (Final) submissions
  • 29 MAR 2019: Deadline for all presenters to pay registration and LACUS membership fees
  •   5  APR 2019: First release of preliminary program
  • 23 JUL 2019:  LACUS begins (Board meeting, registration, reception, opening plenary)
  • 24-25 JUL 2019: Parallel sessions
  • 26 JUL 2019:  LACUS concludes (morning sessions, Pub. Committee)
Presenters are required to be members of LACUS and to be registered for the conference. Regardless of acceptance status, anyone who has not registered and paid registration and membership fees by March 29, 2019 will not have their paper scheduled on the program not will their abstract be published in the 2019 LACUS Meeting Handbook.
