  • Environmental linguistics
  • Pragmatics
  • Social aspects of teaching and learning to communicate
  • Creativity in teaching/learning to communicate
  • Human communication
  • Ethnolinguistics
  • Studying context and acquisition of the meaning-form relation
  • International communication
  • Group interactions in different settings
  • Online communication
  • The effects of social distancing on research and on language learning in schools
  • Speaking and hearing in acquisition and learning contexts
  • Other topics in general / historical / applied linguistics / communication

The Ruth Brend Fund provides financial support to help defray costs of attending LACUS meetings for members from countries with weak currencies.  The Presidents Prize Fund helps pay for prizes awarded to the best student and post-doctoral papers presented at each annual LACUS conference.

Important Dates.
The following is the planned timeline for LACUS 2023:
  • 1 JAN 2023: Abstract submission opens (on-line)
  • 15 MAR 2023: Final abstract submission deadline
  • 19 APR 2023: Notification of acceptance / rejection
  • 30 APR 2023: Deadline for receipt of confirmation of attendance from presenters
  • 5 MAY 2023: Deadline for receipt of presenter registration and membership fees
  • 15 MAY 2023: First release of preliminary program
  • 5-7 JUL 2023: LACUS Conference
  • 5 JUL 2023: Board meeting, registration, reception, opening plenary.

Presenters are required to be members of LACUS and to be registered for the conference. Because of uncertainties created by the COVID-19 pandemic, the LACUS Board of Directors have decided to hold the conference in a hybrid format.  We expect there to be on-site presentations at the planned venue (The University of Toledo) AND virtual (live-streamed) presentations.  ALL presentations (on-site and live-streamed) will be available to ALL attendees, those who are on-site AND those who are participating in LACUS via Webex.  (This means your presentation will be available remotely even if you are presenting in person on-site.)

Proposal submission for LACUS 2023 is available.  See the sidebar for links to the Proposal Guide, Note to Proposal Authors, and Submission Form.
